film-makers Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Castaing-Taylor continue their work stiff capturing beauty and dangers of the Western landscape with this documentary. With only a soundtrack as a narrative, Sweetgrass tracks shepherd through Montana when they took their sheep on the long journey to the Beartooth Mountains. “Sweetgrass” following the last day of the modern cowboy to lead their flock into the hearts and often dangerous Montana Absaroka-Beartooth mountain pastures for the summer. This movie is pretty shocking but unsparing shows a world where nature and culture, animals and humans, vulnerability and violence all tightly meshed.
A paean to the waning world of the Old West, Sweetgrass captures modern cowboys’ overland journey, wrangling thousands of sheep, as they move across Montana’s Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains, amid sweepingly dramatic vistas and endless skies. Husband and wife filmmakers / anthropologists Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Ilisa Barbash spent three summers high in the Rockies among the herders and their charges to chronicle this extraordinary 200-mile journey.comingsoon.net
